Style Guide: What to wear to your photoshoot

You’ve booked in your shoot, yay! But let me guess, now you’re thinking what on earth should we wear?! Dressing yourself in the morning can be hard enough, let alone deciding what you and the whole family should wear in front of the camera. So I’ve put together this handy little guide of do’s and don’ts to make you feel ready and prepared for your photo session.

A little disclaimer: I won’t be giving specific clothes suggestions, but more of a general idea that you can apply to your own style. I always want you to be 100% yourself so ultimately wear what makes you feel good and what you’re happiest in.

Choose a colour palette

Following one overall colour palette makes for beautiful photos. I’d recommend going for neutral, earthy tones as these colours compliment the environment almost anywhere you go and look timeless in photographs. If colour is more your thing, I suggest choosing outfits with more muted tones, blues, greens or shades of pink can work nicely depending on the season. I’d avoid wearing black or any bright colours as these can be very distracting on camera.

Coordination is key

Coordinating outfits is super important. Choose clothing that complements one another as well as your surroundings. Stick to a maximum of 3-4 colours and keep the vibe and textures cohesive. Don’t worry about fully matching, just choose outfits that work nicely together.

Solid Colours vs Patterns

Plain colours always work best for photos, try and avoid patterns as they often dominate the photograph and detract attention from your beautiful faces. Texture and movement is important, pick fabrics that move and flow with you, linen and wool are amazing. Fabrics that add a cosy texture, or materials that get picked up by the wind make all the difference in your photos.

Bring Options

For maternity shoots I always recommend bringing a few options. Gather up 2 or 3 outfits that you feel amazing in and we can play around with different combinations on the day. I always suggest a nice floaty dress and an option with bump out, kaftans and cover ups look great in photos all year round.

Keep it simple and comfy

Comfort is 100% the most important thing, you should look and feel like yourself and feel confident in what you’re wearing. For at-home newborn sessions I always recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothing. Staying neutral in a bedroom setting keeps the photos simple and soft with the focus on the connection and emotion between people.

So to Summarise
